Some of my lunch notes are inspirational notes to tell them to keep their head up and stay positive or to tell them how proud I am to be their mom. Kids are just like us when it comes to bad and good days. I keep “bad day” notes because everybody has those weeks or days when things just aren’t going their way. It’s important to teach our children through example by apologizing and admitting when we have made mistakes. I like to slip a note about being sorry or making a mistake to let my child know that I am sorry for my misstep. Some days, I may have yelled a bit much in the morning or some other Mom mistake. I always have a category for “I’m sorry notes” and “bad day” notes. My teenage son told me that one day last year, he and his friends went through 30 or more jokes that he had stashed, read them all at once, and decided on the one they thought was the best/most funny. I also love that most of my kids will stockpile the jokes and save them. I know that if I slip a joke in their lunches, I’ll get a guaranteed smile, and for a split moment, they have that sense of security in an otherwise hectic day at school. Though I often sign “love, mom” in the bottom corner, it’s more about the gesture, and bringing a smile to their faces each day.
